My name is Zinnia and I am the niece of Jared Lorenzo (nee Huggins) who brutally murdered his own three year old daughter Ellie. 

Jared’s actions were horrific but not unpredictable. That’s why Ellie’s mother fought so hard to protect her from him. Still, he was given the benefit of the doubt by his family and the courts for each and every red flag leading up to this crime.

Monsters like Jared are among us.

Imposing our own sense of morality upon what they are or are not capable of is a dangerous gambit, and we lost Ellie as a direct result of it. She deserved to grow up and have the chance to become her own person. She never even got to go to kindergarten.

Knowing how much Jared cared about appearances, there is the most minute semblance of solace in broadcasting his depravity. My mission here is much deeper than that though.

We need to recognize the signs of danger even if it is our own family member exhibiting them. And we need to restructure the legal system to protect the life and wellbeing of children rather than codifying the rights of abusive partners turned parents who kill.
